LOTTE Advanced Materials obtains UL RTI DAP Lab Accreditation

02/21/2019

LOTTE Advanced Materials said that it has successfully obtained the prestigious UL RTI DAP Lab (RTI Lab) accreditation with its facility that measures and assesses the long-term thermal resistance of plastics in February 2019, achieving the breakthrough in the shortest possible time.

Relative Thermal Index (RTI), widely used for evaluating the long-term heat resistance of plastics, is the most important measurement of safety for materials applied to electric appliances and electronic products. UL(Underwriter’s Laboratory), a global safety consulting and certification company, has exclusive rights to run the RTI evaluation and certification.

In principle, UL conducts its own long-term heat resistance test to determine the maximum service temperature for a material. In addition, UL selectively grants accreditation to a third-party facility that passes the strict standards and review processes. Accredited companies can conduct thermal resistance tests on their own and UL formally recognizes the validity of their test results. While most applicants spend about three years on the average to obtain RTI Lab accreditation, LOTTE Advanced Materials shortened the period to a record 18 months. The latest breakthrough came after UL accredited LOTTE to conduct UL94 tests on plastic materials to measure flammability characteristics in 2012.

A typical RTI certification process takes at least a year for the basic assessment alone and requires a long waiting period of two years on the average, due to the limited test facilities and staff. LOTTE Advanced Materials is now able to run globally recognized tests for plastic materials that require long-term thermal resistance, thereby quickly responding to the fast-paced markets of E&E and energy-related materials.

“With the UL RTI Lab certification, we have gained a crucial foothold to provide customized solutions in the field of specialty materials,” said Lee Ja-hyung, CEO of LOTTE Advanced Materials. “We will continue to strengthen the level of testing and quality certification in order to achieve our vision as a frontrunner of high value added materials, while demonstrating the stature of LOTTE Group’s chemical division on the global market.”

"The reason why consumers can use various electronic products in daily lives is deeply rooted from manufacturers’ efforts around how specialty materials can be used safely even in extreme environments such as high temperature”, said Sajeev Jesudas, International President of UL. “As safety certification for those materials is getting more important in global market, I hope that UL RTI DAP Lab to be a significant growth drive for the industry and LOTTE Advanced Materials to experience positive impacts on their businesses.”
